How to replace paid software with free alternatives

Free swaps for Photoshop, Premiere, Microsoft 365, Acrobat, AutoCAD and more: what you gain, what you lose and what to know before you move your files.

GUIDE beginner · about 20 minutes · by Nuxtre staff · updated 2026-10-14

Most paid programs have a free replacement that does the everyday job well. A few don't, and it's better to know which before you cancel a subscription. For each common swap below you'll find what you gain, what you lose and the one thing to know when you move your work across. Everything here is open source, freeware or a genuinely usable free tier, with any limits spelled out. Reading takes about ten minutes; getting comfortable in a new program takes longer.

Photos and drawing

Instead of Photoshop

GIMP is the all-rounder. Krita is better if you mostly paint or draw. Paint.NET is a quick editor for Windows, and PhotoScape X suits fast fixes, batch edits and collages.

  • You gain: no subscription; layers, masks and non-destructive filters in GIMP; serious brushes and animation in Krita.
  • You lose: Photoshop's AI tools such as Generative Fill, and some polish: GIMP takes a while to feel natural. PhotoScape X keeps some tools for its paid Pro upgrade.
  • Know this: GIMP and Krita open PSD files with their layers, but Photoshop features such as adjustment layers and smart objects generally don't stay editable. Keep your original PSDs and save new work as XCF in GIMP or KRA in Krita. In Krita, Settings → Configure Krita… → Keyboard Shortcuts offers a Photoshop shortcut scheme.

Instead of Lightroom

darktable is the closest match: a photo library plus a raw developer. RawTherapee skips the library and opens your folders directly.

  • You gain: non-destructive raw editing on Windows, macOS and Linux, with your edits kept in small sidecar files next to the photos.
  • You lose: Lightroom's sync with your phone and tablet, and its gentle learning curve. Both programs have far more controls; give yourself a week.
  • Know this: your Lightroom catalogue doesn't transfer, but darktable reads Lightroom's XMP sidecar files: ratings, colour labels, keywords, GPS data and a few basic edits such as crop, exposure and tone curve, converted when you open a photo in its darkroom view. To create those files in Lightroom Classic, select your photos and choose Metadata → Save Metadata To File (Ctrl+S, or Cmd+S on a Mac). Edits won't match exactly, so export finished favourites as JPEG or TIFF first.

Instead of Illustrator or CorelDRAW

Inkscape is the free vector editor, built around the SVG format.

  • You gain: Bézier and freehand pens, calligraphy, live path effects, bitmap tracing and multi-page PDF export on all three systems. Its SVG files open in browsers and laser-cutter software.
  • You lose: Adobe Fonts and cloud libraries. Print preparation, CMYK colour in particular, is weaker, so ask your print shop what they accept.
  • Know this: Inkscape opens Illustrator (.ai) and CorelDRAW (.cdr) files, though complex effects may not come across. It saves SVG by default; export PDF for printers. For familiar keys, go to Edit → Preferences → Interface → Keyboard and pick the Adobe Illustrator set.

Video and audio

Instead of Premiere Pro

DaVinci Resolve is the most powerful free editor. Kdenlive and Shotcut are open source, lighter and kinder to older computers.

  • You gain: in Resolve, colour grading, effects and audio post-production alongside the edit; in Kdenlive, proxy editing and automatic subtitles; in Shotcut, editing most formats without converting them first.
  • You lose: Premiere's links to After Effects, Photoshop and Adobe Stock. The free Resolve works with 8-bit video up to Ultra HD at 60 fps; 10-bit video, the AI tools, noise reduction and hardware-accelerated H.264 and H.265 belong to the paid Studio edition.
  • Know this: no free editor opens Premiere's .prproj files, so finish current projects first; Resolve can import a timeline that Premiere exports as XML. HDR video from phones is 10-bit, so test one of your own clips in the free Resolve before you commit, and expect it to lean hard on your graphics card.

Instead of Audition

Audacity is the free audio editor most people already know.

  • You gain: quick recording, cutting, effects and export on all three systems. Version 4 (September 2026) has a rebuilt interface with dockable panels.
  • You lose: Audition's mixing desk and deeper repair tools. Version 4 also lacks some 3.x features for now, including MIDI tracks, the mixer, macros and some effects; older 3.x releases remain on the official site.
  • Know this: Audition's .sesx sessions won't open in Audacity, so export each track as a WAV file first. Audacity 4 saves projects as .aup4. It opens older .aup3 projects but can't save back to them, which matters if you share projects with someone still on version 3.

Instead of FL Studio or Ableton Live

LMMS is a free, open-source music studio, closest in spirit to FL Studio: patterns, a step sequencer, a piano roll and built-in synths.

  • You gain: a complete beat-making setup for nothing, with SoundFont support, MIDI keyboard input and VST plug-ins on Windows and Linux.
  • You lose: the polish and stock sounds of the paid programs. Ableton users will miss Session View: LMMS has no clip launcher. VST plug-ins don't work on a Mac.
  • Know this: the official download is version 1.3.0-alpha.2 from September 2026; the last stable release dates from 2020. The developers warn that crashes may happen and project files may break, so save often and keep backups. FL Studio (.flp) and Ableton (.als) projects won't open; export the parts you need as WAV files.

Office and PDFs

Instead of Microsoft 365

LibreOffice is the full desktop suite. Microsoft's own free web versions of Word, Excel and PowerPoint run in your browser at office.com with a free Microsoft account. WPS Office looks most like Office, but its free tier shows ads. For Outlook's job, use Thunderbird.

  • You gain: with LibreOffice, documents, spreadsheets and presentations that work offline with no account; with the web apps, genuine Microsoft formatting at no cost.
  • You lose: with LibreOffice, perfect fidelity for complex layouts and Excel macros, and live co-editing; with the web apps, offline use and advanced features.
  • Know this: LibreOffice saves in its own OpenDocument formats (.odt, .ods, .odp) unless told otherwise. If you swap files with Office users, make Microsoft formats the default.
  • Open LibreOffice and choose Tools → Options. The Options window opens, with a list on the left. On a Mac, open the settings from the app's menu, next to the Apple menu, instead.
  • In the list, expand Load/Save and click General. Its settings appear on the right.
  • Under Default file format and ODF settings, set Document type to text documents.
  • Set Always save as to the Word format ending in .docx.
  • Repeat steps 3 and 4 for spreadsheets (the Excel .xlsx format) and presentations (the PowerPoint .pptx format).
  • Click OK. New files now save as .docx, .xlsx and .pptx. If one still saves as .odt, reopen the window and check you changed Always save as with the right document type selected. To undo, pick the ODF formats again.

Instead of Acrobat Pro

Split the job. For reading, Sumatra PDF is fast and plain (Windows only), and Foxit PDF Reader adds comments, form filling and signatures. For merging, splitting, rotating and reordering pages, use PDF Arranger on Windows or Linux; on a Mac, the built-in Preview app handles most of this.

  • You gain: free tools that each do one job well.
  • You lose: editing the text and pictures inside a PDF, turning scans into searchable text (OCR), and redaction. To change a few words, LibreOffice Draw can open a PDF, though complex layouts may shift.
  • Know this: page jobs are easy and free; text edits are not, so where you can, edit the original document and export a fresh PDF. PDFsam Basic also merges and splits for free, but its website and Windows installer promote its paid editions; PDF Arranger has no upsell.

Everyday utilities

Instead of WinRAR

7-Zip opens nearly every archive format and makes its own compact .7z files.

  • You gain: open source, strong compression and no licence reminders.
  • You lose: making RAR archives. 7-Zip extracts RAR files but can't create them.
  • Know this: since its September 2023 update, Windows 11 opens RAR and 7z files in File Explorer by itself. 7-Zip doesn't update itself, so check for new versions yourself, and download it only through our page: a look-alike site served a trojan-laden installer in early 2026.

Instead of Bandicam or Camtasia

OBS Studio records your screen, webcam and games, and streams live. ShareX is a lighter Windows tool for screenshots, short recordings and GIFs.

  • You gain: no watermarks or time limits, and OBS runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
  • You lose: Camtasia's built-in editor, with its zooms, captions and cursor effects.
  • Know this: OBS has no editor, so record there and edit in Shotcut or Kdenlive. ShareX needs 64-bit Windows 10 or newer.

Instead of DAEMON Tools

Windows has mounted disc images by itself since Windows 8. To open an ISO file:

  1. Open File Explorer and find the .iso file.
  2. Right-click it and choose Mount. A new drive appears under This PC, showing the disc's contents.
  3. Use it like a real disc: open its files or run its setup program.
  4. When you're done, right-click the drive under This PC and choose Eject. The drive disappears; the ISO file stays where it was.

If Mount is missing, another disc program has taken over ISO files; uninstalling it usually brings the option back. Windows mounts .iso and .img files, not older formats such as .mdf or .nrg.

3D and CAD

Instead of AutoCAD

LibreCAD is a straightforward 2D drafting program. FreeCAD is a parametric 3D modeller that also produces dimensioned 2D drawings.

  • You gain: no subscription. LibreCAD runs well on old computers; FreeCAD adds solid modelling, assemblies and engineering analysis.
  • You lose: AutoCAD's polish, its add-ons and confidence that every DWG file opens perfectly.
  • Know this: DWG, AutoCAD's own format, is the sticking point. LibreCAD can open DWG files and works natively in DXF; FreeCAD needs a separate converter program for DWG. Ask colleagues for DXF, and save DXF copies of your own drawings before your AutoCAD licence ends.

Instead of 3ds Max or Maya

Blender covers modelling, sculpting, animation, rendering and video editing, free.

  • You gain: a complete 3D suite with a huge community and several releases a year.
  • You lose: studio pipelines and plug-ins built around Max or Maya; some jobs still expect them.
  • Know this: .max and .mb files won't open, so export your models from the old program as FBX, OBJ or USD first. For familiar controls, choose Edit → Preferences → Keymap and pick Industry Compatible from the preset menu at the top. Current Mac versions need Apple silicon.

Privacy and passwords

Instead of a paid VPN

Proton VPN's free plan has no data cap and no ads, and its apps are open source.

  • You gain: an encrypted connection on public Wi-Fi from a company whose no-logs policy has been independently audited.
  • You lose: choice and speed. The free plan covers one device at a time, picks servers for you from 10 countries, and Proton rates its speed as medium. P2P (torrenting) and streaming support are paid-only.
  • Know this: you need a Proton account, and the free plan isn't built for unblocking streaming services or downloading torrents.

Instead of 1Password or LastPass

Bitwarden syncs an encrypted vault across all your devices. KeePassXC keeps everything in one encrypted file on your computer, with no account at all.

  • You gain: Bitwarden's free plan covers unlimited passwords on unlimited devices, plus passkeys. KeePassXC never touches anyone's servers.
  • You lose: the free Bitwarden plan lacks built-in authenticator codes, file attachments and emergency access. KeePassXC has no official phone apps and no sync; you copy the file yourself.
  • Know this: export your vault from the old manager, then import it. In the Bitwarden web app, use Tools → Import; in KeePassXC, use Database → Import…, which reads 1Password exports and CSV files (LastPass exports CSV).

Virtual machines

Instead of Parallels Desktop

Oracle VirtualBox is free on Windows, macOS and Linux. VMware Workstation Pro has been free on Windows and Linux PCs since November 2024. VMware Fusion, its Mac counterpart, is free too, so if you use Fusion there's nothing to replace.

  • You gain: nothing to pay, and snapshots that roll a virtual machine back after a mistake.
  • You lose: Parallels' one-click Windows setup, its Coherence mode for mixing Windows and Mac windows, and its polish.
  • Know this: on an Apple-silicon Mac, Oracle VirtualBox runs ARM versions of operating systems only, and its optional Extension Pack is free for personal and educational use only. Workstation Pro downloads need a free Broadcom account.

Switching without pain

  1. Overlap, don't jump. Install the free program while you still have the paid one, and finish one real job in it before you cancel.
  2. Export first. Before a subscription ends, save copies in formats other programs read: TIFF or PSD for images, DOCX and XLSX for documents, WAV for audio, DXF for drawings, FBX for 3D.
  3. Bring your shortcuts. Krita, Inkscape and Blender can mimic the keys you know, so set that up on day one.
  4. Install in one go. On Windows, Ninite or winget (Windows Package Manager) can install several of these programs at once.
