About

darktable is a free, open-source photography workflow application and raw developer for Windows, macOS and Linux. Its lighttable view manages a library of photos with star ratings, colour labels, tags and filters, while the darkroom view develops raw files non-destructively: every change is recorded as an editable history, saved in the library and in a small XMP sidecar file beside the original, which is never altered. Editing happens in a high-precision pipeline with scene-referred exposure, tone and colour tools, drawn and parametric masks, noise reduction, lens correction and retouching, with OpenCL graphics acceleration where available. Further views cover maps, slideshows, printing and tethered shooting. darktable can also read ratings, labels and keywords from Lightroom's XMP sidecars and translate a handful of basic Lightroom adjustments.

Before you download

  • The Windows installer needs Windows 10 or later; the Windows-on-Arm build needs Windows 11.
  • Mac builds need macOS 14 or later on Apple silicon and macOS 15 or later on Intel Macs. Version 5.6.2 (October 2026) was published with an Apple-silicon Mac build only; Intel Mac users can install 5.6.1.
  • Upgrading from 5.4 converts the library and settings so they no longer open in 5.4; the project advises taking a backup first.
  • Edits converted from Lightroom XMP files only approximate the original look.
