About
Paint.NET is an image and photo editor for Windows that began as a student project mentored by Microsoft and is now developed by Rick Brewster. It sits between Microsoft Paint and full professional suites: it supports layers with blend modes, unlimited undo with a history panel, selection tools, adjustments and a wide range of effects, while keeping a clean interface where several open images appear as tabs. Many effects are accelerated by the graphics card, and pressure-sensitive pens work through Windows Ink. A large community publishes free plugins that add file formats, effects and tools. The direct download is free of charge, and a paid edition on the Microsoft Store is offered as a way to support development. In 2026 the project took over the paint.net domain, which is now its official home.
- Layers with blend modes and unlimited undo history

- The official site moved from getpaint.net to paint.net in 2026; getpaint.net now redirects there.
- The free installer is served from the developer's dotpdn.com domain; offline installers, portable ZIPs and MSIs are on the project's GitHub releases page.
