About

Shotcut is a free, open-source video editor for Windows, macOS and Linux, built on the MLT multimedia framework and FFmpeg and developed mainly by Dan Dennedy of Meltytech. Because it works with media natively, most video, audio and image formats can be placed on the timeline without first converting them, and a project can mix different resolutions and frame rates. Editing happens on a multitrack timeline with ripple edits, keyframes and a large library of video and audio filters, including colour correction, chroma key, stabilisation and text. It handles footage up to 4K and 8K, supports hardware-accelerated decoding and encoding, and can capture from webcams, audio inputs and the screen. The interface is made of dockable panels that can be shown or hidden, so it can start simple and grow as needed. It suits hobbyists and creators who want a capable editor without a subscription.

  • Native editing of most formats with no import step
  • Multitrack timeline with keyframes and ripple edits
  • Filters for colour, chroma key, stabilisation and text
  • Hardware-accelerated encoding on export
  • Dockable, customizable interface panels
