About

MKVToolNix is a free, open-source set of tools for working with Matroska files (the MKV, MKA and WebM container formats), written and maintained by Moritz Bunkus since 2002. Its core job is remuxing: combining video, audio and subtitle tracks from different files into one MKV, or splitting and trimming them, without re-encoding, so quality is untouched and processing is quick. The suite includes mkvmerge for multiplexing, mkvextract for pulling tracks out, mkvinfo for inspecting file structure and mkvpropedit for changing properties in place, all usable from the command line. The MKVToolNix GUI wraps these in a multiplexer, header editor, chapter editor and info tool, making it straightforward to set track names, languages, default flags and chapters. It is widely used by people organising video libraries and preparing subtitled files.

  • Combine video, audio and subtitle tracks without re-encoding
  • Split, append and trim Matroska files
  • Edit track names, languages and flags in place
  • GUI with header and chapter editors
  • Command-line tools for scripting and batch jobs

Before you download

  • The Microsoft Store edition costs a small fee and runs only the GUI; the downloads on the official site are free.
  • Current Windows builds require Windows 10 / Windows Server 2016 or newer.
