About
HandBrake is a free, open-source video transcoder that converts almost any video file, or the contents of an unprotected DVD or Blu-ray, into MP4, MKV or WebM. It is a practical tool for shrinking large recordings, making videos play on phones, tablets and TVs, or archiving disc collections, and it ships with ready-made presets for common devices and quality levels. More experienced users can tune H.264, H.265 and AV1 encoding (through x264, x265 and SVT-AV1), use hardware encoders from Intel, AMD, NVIDIA and Apple, apply filters such as cropping, scaling, deinterlacing and denoising, and choose which audio and subtitle tracks to keep. A queue handles batches of files. HandBrake always re-encodes video, cannot join clips, and does not remove copy protection. A command-line version is available alongside the graphical app.
