About

Audacity is a free, open-source audio editor and recorder that has been a common first choice for podcasting, voice-over work, digitising old recordings and quick music edits since 2000. It records from microphones or line inputs, imports common audio formats, and lets you cut, arrange and process clips across multiple tracks. Built-in effects cover noise reduction, equalisation, compression, normalisation and pitch or tempo changes, and more can be added as VST3, LV2, Audio Unit or Nyquist plug-ins. A spectrogram view helps with spotting and removing unwanted sounds. Version 4, released in September 2026, rebuilt the interface on Qt with new clip-editing tools, saveable workspaces and light, dark and high-contrast themes, and introduced a new project format. The project is maintained by Muse Group together with community contributors.

  • Multitrack recording and clip-based editing
  • Noise reduction, EQ, compression and other built-in effects
  • VST3, LV2, Audio Unit and Nyquist plug-in support
  • Spectrogram view for finding unwanted sounds
  • Export to WAV, MP3, FLAC and other formats

Before you download

  • Version 4 does not yet include some 3.x features (macros, the scripting pipe, MIDI tracks, LADSPA and Vamp plug-ins); older 3.x installers remain available on the official site.
  • Some import and export formats need the separate, optional FFmpeg library.
