About
LMMS is a free, open-source digital audio workstation for making music on a computer, maintained by volunteers. It is organised around patterns and a song timeline: you program drums in a step sequencer, write melodies and chords in a piano roll, arrange the parts in the song editor and balance them in an effects mixer. It comes with its own synthesizers and a sampler, plays SoundFont instruments, takes input from MIDI keyboards and can host VST plug-ins on Windows and Linux. Songs are exported as audio files. The last stable release, 1.2.2, dates from 2020; the official download page now offers the 1.3 series, still labelled alpha, which adds new instruments and effects, detachable windows and native Arm builds for Apple-silicon Macs, Windows and Linux.
- Step sequencer, piano roll and song editor
- Built-in synthesizers, sampler and SoundFont player
- Effects mixer with bundled effects
- MIDI keyboard input
- VST plug-ins on Windows and Linux
Before you download
- The download page offers 1.3.0-alpha.2 (September 2026); the developers warn that crashes may happen and project files may break, so save often and keep backups.
- Projects saved in 1.3 cannot be reopened in the older 1.2 releases.
- VST plug-ins are not supported on macOS.
- 32-bit builds have been dropped: Windows builds need Windows 10 or 11 (Arm64 needs Windows 11), and Mac builds need macOS 10.13 on Intel or macOS 11 on Apple silicon.
