About
7-Zip is a free, open-source file archiver written by Igor Pavlov. On Windows it offers a file manager and right-click integration with File Explorer for packing and unpacking archives. Its native 7z format uses LZMA and LZMA2 compression, and it can also create ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ, TAR and WIM files. It extracts a long list of other formats, including RAR, ISO, CAB, DMG, VHD and many disk-image and installer types. 7z and ZIP archives can be protected with AES-256 encryption, and 7z archives can be made self-extracting. A command-line version is included, console builds are offered for Linux and macOS, and no registration or payment is required, including in businesses.

Before you download
- The graphical file manager is Windows-only; the Linux and macOS builds are command-line tools.
- There is no automatic updater, and older versions had security flaws (for example CVE-2025-0411, fixed in 24.09), so check for updates manually.
- The official site is 7-zip.org; a look-alike domain (7zip.com) served a trojanized installer in early 2026.
