About
Oracle VirtualBox is an open-source hypervisor that runs other operating systems in a window on your desktop, so you can try Linux on a Windows PC, keep an older Windows version for legacy software, or test programs in an isolated environment. Each virtual machine has its own virtual disk, memory and network settings, and snapshots let you save a machine's state and roll back after experiments. Guest Additions improve integration through shared folders, a shared clipboard and automatic screen resizing. Machines can be imported and exported in the standard OVF/OVA format and controlled from the command line with VBoxManage. Hosts include Windows, Linux, Intel and Apple silicon Macs, and Solaris, and it is a common choice for students, developers and home-lab users.
- Run several guest operating systems side by side
- Snapshots to save and restore machine states
- Guest Additions for shared folders, clipboard and display resizing
- OVF/OVA import and export
- VBoxManage command-line control
Before you download
- The optional Extension Pack uses Oracle's PUEL licence: free only for personal or educational use; commercial use needs a paid licence.
- On Apple silicon Macs it officially runs ARM-based guest systems only; x86 guests are not supported out of the box.
