About

FreeCAD is a free, open-source parametric 3D modeller for mechanical parts, product design, architecture and technical drawings. Parametric means a model is built from editable steps and dimensions: change a sketch or a measurement and everything that depends on it updates. Its tools are grouped into workbenches, including Sketcher for constrained 2D sketches, Part Design for solid parts, Assembly, TechDraw for dimensioned 2D drawings, BIM for buildings, FEM for structural analysis and CAM for machining. It reads and writes STEP, IGES, STL, DXF and SVG among other formats, and can be extended with add-ons and Python scripts. DWG support is limited and depends on a separate converter. Version 1.1 arrived in March 2026, followed by regular maintenance releases.

  • Parametric modelling driven by constrained sketches
  • Workbenches for parts, assemblies, buildings, FEM and CAM
  • TechDraw for dimensioned 2D drawings
  • STEP, IGES, STL and DXF import and export
  • Python scripting and an add-on manager

Before you download

  • Windows builds need Windows 10 or later and macOS builds need macOS 12 Monterey or later; Linux builds are AppImages for x86_64 and aarch64.
  • Opening DWG files requires a separate converter program; DXF works without one.
  • Its sketch-based, parametric workflow differs from 2D drafting programs, so expect a learning curve.
