Ad-supported, and flagged by Microsoft Defender as a potentially unwanted application. But its installer may add other software — see the box below before you click anything.

What the numbers mean

⚠ Before you install: the installer carries offers

Format Factory is ad-supported and its installer has carried third-party offers; Microsoft Defender and other antivirus tools flag it as a potentially unwanted application.

  1. Read every installer screen: on any offer, click Decline or untick it before Next.
  2. Choose a custom install if one is offered, and untick extras.
  3. Afterwards, check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for anything you did not ask for.

The clean route: Converters with no ads or offers: HandBrake for video and Audacity for audio.

About

Format Factory is a free, ad-supported multimedia converter for Windows from the developer Free Time. It gathers many small media jobs into one program: converting video to formats such as MP4, AVI, WMV, MPG and FLV, converting, joining and mixing audio, converting images including WebP and HEIC, and ripping DVDs, Blu-ray discs and audio CDs to files. Over the years it has added extras such as clipping, splitting, merging and cropping video, removing logos, shrinking file sizes, repairing damaged media files, a screen recorder, a video downloader, PDF conversion and merging, and archive extraction. It is aimed at casual users who want point-and-click conversions with device-oriented presets rather than detailed encoder control. The interface is available in more than 60 languages, and a BitTorrent link is offered alongside the direct installer.

  • Converts video, audio and image formats with device presets
  • Rips DVDs, Blu-ray discs and audio CDs
  • Joins, splits, crops and clips video and audio
  • Screen recorder and video downloader
  • PDF conversion and media repair tools
