0 · CLEAN*The codecs and the player it installs are clean. But its installer may add other software — see the box below before you click anything.
⚠ Before you install: the installer carries offers
Users reported in 2026 that some K-Lite installs showed an optional third-party offer — a program that shares your internet connection as a proxy (Infatica).
- Download from codecguide.com, using the mirrors on its own download page (Basic or Standard is enough for most people).
- Choose Normal mode in the installer and read every screen before clicking Next.
- If a screen offers any other program — especially anything about sharing bandwidth or "earning" from your connection — click Decline.
- Afterwards, check Settings → Apps → Installed apps for anything you did not ask for.
The clean route: If you only want to play files, VLC media player or MPC-HC play almost everything without a codec pack.
About
K-Lite Codec Pack is a free collection of DirectShow decoders, splitters and related tools that lets Windows programs play a wide range of audio and video formats. It is meant for people who use Media Player Classic, Windows Media Player or other DirectShow-based software and want consistent playback of formats Windows does not handle on its own. Four editions are offered: Basic contains only the essential filters, Standard adds the MPC-HC player, Full adds madVR and extra 3D video support, and Mega adds further ACM/VFW codecs and utilities. Core decoding is handled by the bundled LAV Filters, and a Codec Tweak Tool helps diagnose and repair codec problems. Updates arrive frequently, usually to bring in new versions of bundled components such as MPC-HC and MediaInfo.
- Four editions, from essential filters only to a full toolkit
- LAV Filters for decoding and splitting most formats
- MPC-HC player included from the Standard edition up
- Codec Tweak Tool for diagnosing and fixing codec issues
- Explorer thumbnails for video files via Icaros
Before you download
- Windows only.
- Users have reported some installs bringing an optional third-party offer (Infatica bandwidth-sharing proxy software); read each setup screen and decline extras you do not want.
- The publisher's FAQ covers a reputation-based Norton warning (WS.Reputation.1) on the installer.
