About

VLC is a free, open-source media player from the non-profit VideoLAN project. Its main appeal is that it plays almost anything without hunting for extra codecs: common and obscure video and audio formats, DVDs, audio CDs, network streams and even partially downloaded files. Beyond basic playback it can convert files between formats, record streams, adjust picture and sound with filters, and load or re-time subtitle tracks. The interface is plain and functional, and it can be extended with skins and add-ons. Builds are published for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, along with several less common systems, which makes it a sensible default player for almost any computer or phone. It carries no ads, user tracking or paid tiers.

  • Plays most video and audio formats without separate codec packs
  • Handles DVDs, audio CDs and network streams
  • Built-in format conversion and stream recording
  • Subtitle loading with timing adjustment
  • Audio and video filters plus add-on extensions
