About
Visual Studio Code, usually shortened to VS Code, is a free code editor from Microsoft for Windows, macOS and Linux. Out of the box it offers code completion, an integrated terminal, built-in Git source control and a debugger, with strong built-in support for JavaScript and TypeScript. Its main draw is the extension marketplace: add-ons supply support for Python, C++, Go, Rust and many other languages, along with themes, linters and framework tooling. Remote development extensions let it work on code inside containers, on other machines over SSH or in WSL. Optional GitHub Copilot integration adds AI chat and code suggestions. It suits beginners and professional developers alike, and it is a separate, much lighter product than the full Visual Studio IDE.
- IntelliSense code completion and a built-in debugger
- Integrated terminal and Git source control
- Large extension marketplace for languages and tools
- Remote editing over SSH, in containers or in WSL
