About
Git for Windows packages the Git distributed version control system for Windows. It is maintained as its own open-source project that follows upstream Git releases. Besides the git command itself, it installs Git Bash, a terminal that emulates the Bash shell and bundles familiar Unix tools such as ssh, so tutorials written for Linux or macOS work largely unchanged. Git GUI gives a basic graphical way to review, stage and commit changes, and optional Explorer integration opens either tool from a folder's context menu. Git Credential Manager stores sign-ins for hosting services such as GitHub and Azure Repos. The setup wizard lets you choose a default editor, line-ending handling and terminal. Many developer tools on Windows expect it to be installed.
