About
Python is a general-purpose programming language known for its readable syntax, and python.org distributes CPython, the reference interpreter maintained by the Python Software Foundation and the core developers. A download includes the interpreter, the large standard library, the pip tool for adding third-party packages from PyPI, and IDLE, a simple editor and interactive shell aimed at learners. Python is used for scripting and automation, web back ends, data analysis, scientific computing, machine learning and teaching. On Windows, python.org now steers users to the Python install manager, which installs, updates and switches between several Python versions from the command line. macOS users get a standard package installer, while Linux users normally rely on their distribution's packages or build from source.
- Reference CPython interpreter and standard library
- pip for installing packages from PyPI
- IDLE editor and interactive shell
- Built-in venv for isolated project environments
- Windows install manager for multiple Python versions
Before you download
- On Windows, python.org now recommends the Python install manager (also offered in the Microsoft Store); the classic full .exe installer is deprecated and will not be produced for Python 3.16 or later.
- For Linux, python.org supplies source code only; most distributions provide Python through their package manager.
