About

Spotify is a streaming service for music, podcasts and audiobooks, and its desktop app is the full-featured client for Windows and macOS. After signing in you can search a very large catalogue, follow artists, build and share playlists, and get personalised mixes and recommendations based on your listening. The free tier is supported by ads, while paid Premium plans remove ads and add features such as downloading music for offline listening and higher audio quality. Spotify Connect lets the app control playback on phones, speakers and consoles signed in to the same account, and local music files can be added alongside streamed tracks. Apps are also available for Android and iOS, and Spotify provides a Linux client through its own package repository and Snap, though it says Linux is not an actively supported platform.

  • Large catalogue of music, podcasts and audiobooks
  • Personalised playlists and recommendations
  • Spotify Connect to control playback on other devices
  • Offline downloads and ad-free listening with Premium
  • Local files playable alongside streamed music

Before you download

  • Requires a Spotify account; the free tier plays ads, and offline music downloads need a Premium subscription.
  • The Linux client is offered by Spotify but described as not actively supported.
