About

Tor Browser is the Tor Project's official way to use the Tor anonymity network. It is a modified version of Firefox Extended Support Release that sends traffic through three volunteer-run relays, so the sites you visit do not see your IP address and your internet provider cannot see which sites you open. The browser is configured so that all its users look as alike as possible, which makes fingerprinting harder, and it deletes cookies and history when it closes. A security-level setting can switch off risky features, including JavaScript on some or all sites. Built-in bridges such as Snowflake and obfs4 help people connect from countries where Tor is blocked, and the browser can open .onion sites. It is used by journalists, activists and anyone who wants stronger privacy, at the cost of slower page loads.

  • Routes traffic through three Tor relays
  • Uniform fingerprint shared by all users
  • Clears cookies and history on exit
  • Security levels that can disable JavaScript
  • Built-in bridges to get around censorship

Before you download

  • Pages load more slowly than in a normal browser, and some sites block Tor or show extra CAPTCHAs.
  • Each download has a matching PGP signature (.asc) for checking that it came from the Tor Project.
