About
Discord is a chat platform that started among gamers and is now used by all kinds of communities, from study groups to open-source projects. Communities are organised as servers, each split into text channels and always-on voice channels that members can drop in and out of. Discord also handles direct messages, group calls, video, and screen or game streaming, and it supports bots and apps that add moderation tools, games and other features. The desktop app adds an in-game overlay and push-to-talk. Basic use is free; an optional Nitro subscription adds larger uploads, higher-quality streaming, custom emoji across servers and profile extras. Because each server sets its own rules and moderators, the experience varies a great deal from one community to another.
