4 · VERY HEAVY*Pop-up upsells, browser add-ons and background services from the same company as Avast. But its installer may add other software — see the box below before you click anything.
⚠ Before you install: the installer carries offers
The installer offers other products from the same company — such as AVG Secure Browser — and can change your default browser if you let it.
- On the first installer screen, untick every extra product (for example AVG Secure Browser) before clicking Install.
- When asked, pick the free plan and skip any trial.
- Afterwards, check your default browser and Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
The clean route: Windows Security, built into Windows 10 and 11, is free, has no offers and is enough for most people.
About
AVG AntiVirus Free is the no-cost Windows antivirus from AVG, which, like Avast, belongs to Gen Digital. It provides real-time protection that scans files as they are opened or added, blocks risky downloads and scam websites, and checks email attachments. Further layers watch running software for suspicious behavior, guard against ransomware, scan the home Wi-Fi network for weaknesses, and warn when an email password appears to be at risk. AVG also publishes security apps for macOS, Android and iOS. The free edition is aimed at households that want automatic protection without a subscription, while the paid AVG Internet Security edition builds further features on top of it.
- Real-time scanning of files, downloads and email
- Blocks unsafe and scam websites
