Anubis
Anubis is the psychopomp of the roshi: a gentle jackal in a tattered hood, gold-and-lapis ears, glowing eyes, an ankh at the collar, among purple spirit flames — a guide between worlds, calm, observant and loyal.
Four minutes after a roshi dies, he comes. The roshi gets up as though alive, walks to him, and they fade together; the grave keeps the name. He takes the wild ones too, and children who have seen it ask where. On the Lantern Moon, lanterns go out on the Spring for the ones he took.
