About

balenaEtcher is an open-source image writer from balena for putting operating system images onto USB flash drives and SD cards. Its interface reduces the job to three steps: choose an image file or URL, select the target drive and start flashing. After writing, it checks the data on the drive to catch corrupted writes, a common cause of boot failures. System drives are hidden by default to lower the risk of wiping the wrong disk. Etcher can also clone one drive to another and write the same image to several drives at once. It is popular with Raspberry Pi users and with anyone preparing Linux installers who prefers a simple graphical tool, and it runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.

  • Flash from an image file or a URL
  • Automatic verification after writing
  • Hides system drives to prevent mistakes
  • Drive cloning and multi-drive writing

Before you download

  • Flashing erases everything on the target drive.
  • Current versions need 64-bit Windows 10 or later; the site points Windows 7, 8 and 32-bit users to an older release.
