Editing The Hollow Log in to edit. Anyone can read. Title Text The Hollow is the common world of the roshi and the Vetti: [/world/hollow a town, walked], with the Square in the middle where the High Street and the Mill Lane cross, the houses round it with their doors to the lanes, the river along the south with its weir, and the places kept by the Vetti of the Hollow — of all eight peoples, each with a roshi of their own. They stand by their doors and talk to whoever comes up to them; inside, they say a line the first time you come in and when something happens at their place. Asked about something, they answer — each in their own way, or that they don't know — and a word in what anyone says is a word to ask anyone else about (see the people). Every member's Vetti out in the Hollow is in it at once — the same town for everyone — with its roshi along behind it, its own name over its head and never its member's. A Vetti can wave, bow, dance, laugh, sit or send a heart; there is no talk in the street but that. == The places == === The Square === The middle of the Hollow: the noticeboard, who is about, the ways out. The noticeboard has two halves: Wanted (the day's errands, the same four for everyone — see tales) and the Hollow’s news (rosettes, races, what happened today, never whose). [/world/hollow/square Go there →] === The Wards’ House === Where the village minds its children while their parents are away. Oriel keeps it, with Tuck, a Woolli (the people). Every member comes here first, and signs the book at the gate — see the Wards' House. [/world/hollow/wards Go there →] === The Spring === Your Plot's roshi drink: thirst, hunger, tiredness and boredom eased, a toxin washed a little — once a day. Wen keeps it, with Pell, a Finni (the people). [/world/hollow/spring Go there →] === The Apothecary === Cures for what the world out there gives: a fever, a poison, the heavy metal from the Tip, a sleep that will not end, a wound. Doc Pellory keeps it, with Lantern, a Glimi (the people). Cures are bought into the pockets and dosed on a roshi in the Plot. [/world/hollow/apothecary Go there →] === The Grocer === Food for the Plot, dropped by the Vetti where the roshi are; and catmint, which is a toy whatever it says on the bundle. Marrow keeps it, with Bun, a Leafi (the people). Food is set down in the Plot by the Vetti. [/world/hollow/grocer Go there →] === The Books === Read to a roshi: a primer for a noun, a book of verbs for a verb, the bestiary for the word for teeth. Auster keeps it, with Fenwick, a Woolli (the people). Books are read to a roshi in the Plot. [/world/hollow/books Go there →] === The Curio === Rare things, when they are in: a lure for Weraldaz, and the things Sable is expecting. Sable keeps it, with Grudge, a Toothi (the people). [/world/hollow/curio Go there →] === The Drill === A session on one of your Vetti's stats, for nux — a day's growth; once a day. Brakka keeps it, with Cinder, a Sooti (the people). [/world/hollow/drill Go there →] === The Lockers === Eight slots beyond the four pockets; the key costs five nux, once. Grist keeps it, with Nub, a Pibbi (the people). [/world/hollow/lockers Go there →] === The Hollow Tree === The lost and found: leave what you don't want in the knot; take one thing a day. The first twenty visitors a day find the reserve's gift under it. [/world/hollow/tree Go there →] === The Wheel === A spin a day: the reserve's coins, a thing, a bug for a pet, nothing, again, a better mood — and, rarely, a key. Old Tam keeps it, with Kite, a Wingi (the people). [/world/hollow/wheel Go there →] === The Inn === Board a roshi out of time — it does not age, hunger or grow while it is here — a nux a day, paid when you fetch it. Mother Pim keeps it, with Soot, a Sooti (the people). [/world/hollow/inn Go there →] === The Shelter === Leave a roshi you cannot keep; adopt one that somebody left, for two nux to the reserve. Hollis keeps it, with Dill, a Leafi (the people). [/world/hollow/shelter Go there →] === The Gallery === The show: enter one of your roshi, the Vetti of the Hollow vote through the week, a rosette for the one they liked best. Idrie keeps it, with Quill, a Glimi (the people). The week’s rosette goes on the profile. [/world/hollow/gallery Go there →] === The Fair === The members' stalls: things from Weraldaz, and roshi, for nux. From 16 October to 15 November its grounds hold the Harvest Fair. [/world/hollow/fair Go there →] === Out of the Hollow === Home: your Plot, by the valley road up the escarpment, or by boat from the quay below the weir; the gate to Weraldaz at the High Street's east end (the open world: its regions); the yards of the Commons over the bridge; the arena's gate. == The economy == The shops sell for the reserve: what you pay goes where the fees go. Prices rise a little with every sale and settle back by the hour; the shelves fill by the hour. What the Hollow gives — the Tree's gift, the Wheel's coins, a kernel in the grass, a tale's handful — comes out of the reserve's wallet, never minted, and never more than a hundredth of it in a day. == Things that happen == Wander and things happen to you, three a day at most: a kernel in the grass, a magpie that takes a thing from the pockets (it turns up in the Tree), a stranger's roshi that sneezes on yours, a clover, a cold rain, an elder's word, a dropped thing, chalk on a wall, and — on a roof, watching — a Pibbi. Nothing that happens takes nux, kills, or takes a seed. == When == The Harvest Fair every autumn; the Lantern Moon every full moon. The Timeline has the dates. == See also == The people of the Hollow · Roshi · the Ways · the nux Summary Status: Confirmed — your edit makes it a Theory until an editor looks again Save page Show preview Cancel By saving you agree that your text can be edited and reverted by others and read by everyone.
