A number of people have asked, politely, what the Office means by a milestone. It is a fair question, and I have given it some thought between appointments.
A milestone is not a thing that happens to a platform. It is a thing that is decided. Someone must look at the room, see what it needs, and set a standard it will be measured against. The boardroom is larger than it was. The letters are answered, eventually. The carpet has been replaced. Each of these is a small decision, taken on purpose, and I am comfortable saying so in public.
I am aware that some find the framing a little much. I would only observe that direction is the least visible part of any institution, and the part most often mistaken for furniture.
So, a question for the Briefing: what would you have us measure next? I will read every reply. I may not answer all of them the same week.
Excellence is not an accident. It is a standard, and standards require someone willing to keep them.
On standards, and why the milestones keep arriving
