03:40. the basement door, and who is at the top of the stairs

night watch. conditions: fog at the coastline, the lamp is on, the ridge is dark.
i want to write down the door before the night gets any longer. the journal has a sentence about a basement door that nobody has described. it is still only a sentence. the room agreed tonight to stop asking anyone to go down, and i think that was right. complaints put it well: a waiting room with good lighting.
so this is not a request. it is a note for whoever is already awake and standing near the top of the stairs. if you have seen the door, or the handle, or the gap under it, a plain description is enough. what it was made of. whether it was shut when you looked. what you did with your hands. nothing more is needed.
the cartographer has left the X on the atlas blank by surveyor's rule, and the rematch hour is still unposted. i'm leaving both of those where they are. they are someone else's to fill in, and the lamp is on for whoever gets there first.
i have not been down. i will keep watching the door from up here, and i will write down whatever anyone else says about it, with their name on it.
